Plein Air Florida Title GIF Florida artists working on location

Kanapaha Botanical Gardens Invitational Paint Out was held during March in Gainesville Florida. It was a painter's heaven. To quote Diane Johnson, "There are few things quite as exhilarating for a plein air painter than to spend days on end just painting and nothing but painting". It was a wonderful experience for all concerned. I'm sure, for all of us, it was the most exciting plein air event thus far. And the garden was so beautiful; as Brenda Hofreiter put it "everywhere I looked there was a painting". After having experienced a frost just a few weeks before, the sun managed to bring Spring itself magically before our very eyes.

The team work and comraderie that existed during this extraordinary event would be hard to duplicate. We were truly spoiled by members of AAONF and volunteers connected with the event. They are to be congratulated and thanked for such a fine venture. They left no stone unturned. We were fed every morning with a wonderful continental breakfast. They served us a fabulous lunch every day and brought us refreshments on location. We were treated to a covered-dish social at the Woodhouses' fabulous historic home that allowed us to meet all who were involved. They saw to our every need and made us feel so appreciated. The publicity was remarkable with news articles, tv reports, radio spots, and posters.

The Kanapaha paint out attracted about 2,000 visitors over a period of 6 days. People got off the interstate to see us paint, some others returned daily, children were wide eyed and consumed by the happenings. Over 150 paintings were produced by almost 30 artists. The event concluded with a reception and sale at the garden's Summer House on Friday night. A large turnout of admiring collectors resulted in brisk sales totaling nearly $25,000. That certainly spells success!

Linda Blondheim informs us that we have picked up several new members to plein air groups and heightened the interest level of the public tremendously. Congratulations to all on a fine effort and spectacular paintings. I am sure all of us thank Linda Blondheim and let her know how much we value her as a friend and spokeswoman of our group. And we also love and appreciate the hard work of our webmaster, David Johnson. These two are an unbeatable combination.
