Plein Air Florida Title GIF Florida artists working on location

Orlando Wetlands Park Paint Out was held during February. Plein Air Florida members were invited by PAPCF to attend Tuesday morning paintouts in the 1,400 acre created wetland located in Ft. Christmas, Florida. The Orlando Wetlands Park is crisscrossed with raised berm roads that look out over palm islands, cattails, cypress domes, wax myrtle and open lakes.

Painters in attendance were Sharon Muldoon, Cynthia Edmonds, Frideborg Phillips, Brenda Hofreiter, and Margy and Tony Rich. We all trekked down the bermed roads in search of the best vistas. There were all kinds of birds and wildlife to see. Cynthia spotted a family group of 5 otters crossing the road on one of her surveillance hikes. There were armadillo, raccoon, flocks of ibis, coots and marsh hens, herons of all kinds, hawks and buzzards. It was hard to get any painting done for all the wildlife watching! Sharon and Frideborg painted near a couple of 10 ft. alligators on the birding loop. Even keeping one eye on the gators, they both managed to produce great paintings! Cynthia, Margy, Tony and Brenda spread out along the road to the lake to try their hand at painting the cattails and palm vistas.

We all hiked back to the covered pavilions, near the parking lot, every day at noon to eat lunch and show our efforts for the day. We had a great time being inspired by the artwork, tales of wildlife encounters and catching up on the latest news. The weather cooperated and was perfect for each of the days that we painted. A good time and productive painting was had by all. If you missed it, you should take time to visit the wetlands. It's worth the trip. The paint out culminated with the Orlando Wetlands Festival on February 23rd where paintings done on location were exhibited by the participants. Although festival day was hampered by constant rain, it was a chance to introduce plein air painting to the environmental exhibitors and people in attendance.
