Clothing
1. Wear dull colors to reduce reflection onto the painting or palette.
2. Dress in layers to accomodate any change in weather.
3. Wearing sunglasses will change the values and colors you see.
4. Take a poncho or plastic bag for the unexpected rain shower.
Gear
1. Use a leakless non-breakable container for solvents.
2. A good backpack is handy when seeking out remote or rugged sites.
3. A battery operated portable fan feels wonderful on a hot day.
4. Take a drying box or container to carry wet paintings home.
Health
1. Be sure to have plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
2. Pack healthy and nutritious snacks instead of sweets.
3. Wear long sleeves or apply sunblock cream to exposed skin.
4. Don't wear perfume or cologne, as it attracts bugs.
Safety
1. Take along a cell phone for emergencies.
2. Work in groups or pairs whenever possible to discourage trouble.
3. Watch for critters and insects around the area you choose.
4. A dog companion can warn of trouble and discourage mischief.
Technique
1. Use a toned canvas to better judge values and colors.
2. Select a spot that puts you and your painting in the shade.
3. Avoid dappled light on your painting and palette.
4. Take time when mixing colors to analyze the relationships.
Travel

2. Mark your trail when venturing into unknown territory.
3. Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return.
4. Leave early to compensate for delays like road work or car trouble.
