Plein Air Florida artists continue improving, excelling, exploring and gaining recognition for their talents. This section celebrates our members awards, achievements and milestones in art.
Mayor's Selection
TBPAP members Donald Eaton and Robert Simone have been selected by Saint Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker to display their paintings in his office for an indefinite period.
Cover Art for Drew
ECPA member Marge Drew had her painting "Palms Aspire" chosen for the cover of See St.Augustine magazine along with a half page bio.
Avant Best at OPA
"A Mother's Kiss" by PASC member Dominic Avant won Best of Show at the "2007 Oil Painters of America-Eastern Regional" exhibit at Weatherburn Gallery in Naples FL.
Botet Painting in NC Show
ECPA member Kay Botet's painting "Mast General Store" was juried into a show at the Highlands Art Center in NC by the director of the Atlanta Art Museum.
Val Sandell in National Shows
PASC member Val Sandell from Sarasota FL had her painting "Hay Bales" accepted to the American Women Artists National Competition to be shown at the LeKAE Gallery in Scottsdale AZ. And her painting "Rocky Shoals" was accepted into the Oil Painters of America Eastern Regional to be shown at Weatherburn Gallery in Naples FL.
Accepted to Paint the Parks National
PAF members Hope Barton "Big Cypress Swamp" and Karen Hitt "Up from the River Bed" paintings have been accepted into the Top 100 of Paint America-2007 Paint the Parks Competition. Formerly called Arts for the Parks, this is a very prestigious event for landscape painters.
Sandell Recognized
PASC member Val Sandell from Sarasota FL has been recognized as a Signature member of the American Impressionist Society.
Friedman a Winner
TBPAP member Jenna Friedman won the Second Place award for her oil painting of a village street scene at the 2007 "Concorso Rapido" plein air competition sponsored by the Dunedin Fine Arts Center.
Paint the Town Winners
TBPAP members win awards at the Saint Petersburg FL "Paint the Town" competition. Elizabeth Rose won Best of Show for her pastel of a tree and Virginia LaTourrette received an Honorary for her oil of a sailboat.
National Competition
FKPAP member Priscilla Coote of Marathon has been accepted into the 3rd Annual Plein Air Easton, a national plein air competition, exhbition and quick draw, in Easton, MD. Artists paint out from July 23-26, then submit their two best for the exhbition and sale on July 28-29.
Library Purchase
TBPAP member Virginia LaTourrette had two paintings purchased for the permanent collection of the Upper Tampa Bay Library-Hillsborough County. Both are pastels, one of the Vinoy Hotel and another of Dunedin.
Edmonds Selected for Poster
PAF member Cynthia Edmonds had her painting "Greeneda Court" selected for the poster at the 48th Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival 2007. See it at WPSAF
Holmes Published
FCPAP member Linda Holmes had five of her paintings published in the Dec 2006 edition of Cancer Control Journal published by the Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. They are also included in a traveling exhibit.
LaTourrette Gets Grant
TBPAP member Virginia LaTourrette was selected for a 2007 Florida Artist Enhancement Grant. She will use the award for education on a plein air mentoring program with Albert Handell in Apalachicola.
Blondheim Selected for Residency
HPAP member Linda Blondheim has been chosen as 2007 Artist-in-Residence for the Florida Trails Association. Her painting will be reproduced on t-shirts and she will demonstrate and lecture at their annual conference in March.
Clements Earns Award at Buford
PAFI member Carly Clements received a 2nd Place Award for her plein air pastel in the 2006 Historic Buford Plein Air Paintout Festival.
LaTourrette Wins Award for Pastel
TBPAP member Virginia LaTourrette received an Honorable Mention for her plein air pastel painting in the 2006 Southeastern Pastel Society "International Show".
Volkmann Chosen for Residency
PAF member Mary Jane Volkmann has been selected by the State of Georgia as a First Place Finalist and will serve a residency at Sapelo Islands GA in Nov 2006.
PAF Artists Take Awards
The 2006 IPAP-Worldwide Paintout in Mt.Dora, sponsored by the Mt.Dora Center for the Arts and CFPAA awarded PAF members Larry Moore - Second Place, Stewart Jones - Third Place, Jackie Schindehette - Honorable Mention. Congratulations to all!
Marge Drew on Cover
ECPA member Marge Drew had her painting published on the cover of Ormond Magazine, Jul-Aug 2006.
Marilyn Masters on Two Covers
ECPA member Marilyn Masters had her painting published on the cover of the Jul-Aug 2006 Flagler Magazine, and the Halifax Magazine.
Schindehette in Magazine
OPAP member Jackie Schindehette will appear in the August 2006 issue of Florida Magazine. She and four other artists were inteviewed for an article about plein air artists in Florida.
PR for Plein Air
The Orlando Sentinel published a nice article about plein air painting featuring CFPAA. Artists mentioned were Elisabeth Ferber, Mary J Gray, Sharon Muldoon, and Stewart Jones, as was CFPAA, ECPA, OPAP and PAF.
EPCOT Garden Fest Winners
Awards for the 2006 "Art in the Garden" event at EPCOT Center were 1st Place to Cynthia Edmonds (PAF), 2nd Place to Charles Dickenson (PAASA), 3rd Place Nancy Moskovitz (OPAP). Congratulations to all!
Rapid LaTourrette
TBPAP member Virginia LaTourrette wins First Place at the "Concorso Rapido" sponsored by the Dunedin Fine Art Center.
Hitt Honored
VPA member Karen Hitt was recently honored with a Muse Award by the Sarasota County Art & Cultural Alliance.
Award for Edmonds
PAF member Cynthia Edmonds took the 2nd Place Award with her painting "Coffee Pot Boulevard, Lion Gate" in the 2006 "Paint the Town" paintout sponsored by Alla Prima Fine Art in Saint Petersburg FL.
Purchase Award for Schindehette
OPAP member Jackie Schindehette was honored with the President's Choice purchase award at the 2006 Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival.
Paris Published
PAFI member Deborah Paris is featured in two new books, "Landscapes of New Mexico" published by Fresco Fine Art Publications and "Plein Air New Mexico" a Jack Richeson series.
Award for Stach
PAPTC member Judy Stach was awarded an Honorable Mention for her painting "A Great Day Ahead". It will be featured as part of the book "Best of Series 2006 - Florida Artists and Artisans" which should be out this summer.
First Place for Schaefer
The "Artists and Their Image" show, at the Saint Augustine Art Association, recently awarded ECPA member Charles Schaefer a First Place for his painting from Ocala titled "Warm Up For Dressage".
Featured Artist Article
The January 2006 edition of Orlando Magazine will feature PAF member Brenda Hofreiter and her paintings in their article "Paint the Town".
1st Place Award for Hahn
First Place at the Downtown Arts Stroll in Clearwater Florida went to TBPAP member Elaine Hahn. Her painting "Calvary Baptist Church" is of a historic building scheduled for demolition.
LaTourrette in News Article
TBPAP member Virginia LaTourrette was featured in the November 11, 2005 issue of the Saint Petersburg Times newspaper. The article highlighted her teaching and plein air activities. Read it.
FCPAP Members Show Awards
Congratulations to FCPAP members that won awards in the "Scenes of Florida" juried exhibit held at Gallery L in Jacksonville FL; 1st Place Ann Benson, 2nd Place Hope Barton, 3rd Place Lucille Stephens, Honorable Mention David Johnson and Randy Pitts.
Paris in American Artist Magazine
PAFI member Deborah Paris will be featured in the December 2005 issue of American Artist magazine.
LaTourrette Wins Award and Earns Signature
TBPAP member Virginia LaTourrette received the HK Holbein Merit Award at the Southeastern Pastel Society 2005 Members' Juried Exhibition. The piece is a plein air depicting our beautiful Florida area of Tarpon Springs. She has also earned the Signature member level of the New Mexico Watercolor Society.
PASC Members in National Show
PASC members Val Sandell and Dobson Cundiff had paintings juried into the American Women Artists 2005 Competition. This year's show will be held at the Texas Art Gallery in Dallas TX.
Plein Air Heads Gets Feature Article
HPAP members Betty Blitch, Linda Blondheim, and Dahvi Fradkin paint together regularly as the Plein Air Heads. Recently the Gainesville Sun did a feature story on them.
PAF Members Capture Paintout Awards
The Crescent Beach Invitational Paintout sponsored by Island Fine Art in Crescent Beach FL was well attended by PAF members who earned most of the awards. Best of Show went to Tom Sadler of CFPAA, 1st Place to Charles Dickinson of PAASA, 2nd Place to Dominic Avant of RPAP, 3rd Place to Steven Geer of CFPAA, Award of Merit to Christopher Cardot of ECPA, Charles Schaefer of ECPA, Trish Vevera of ECPA.
7 PAF Members in AIS National
"American Impressionist Society National Exhibit" at Nichols Fine Art Gallery in Taos NM includes PAF members Kay Botet, Brenda Hofreiter, Kathleen Newman, Virginia Pendergrass, Barbara Perrotti, Val Sandell and Judy Stach.
Rosalyn O'Grady Wins Award
ECPAP member Rosalyn O'Grady took a Third Place award at the SE Regional Juried Exhibition sponsored by Arts & Design Society.
Capitol Exhibit for Schindehette
Jackie Schindehette had a three month solo exhibit at the Governor's Gallery in the State Capitol in Tallahassee. And she got to meet and have her picture taken with Gov. Bush.
Larry Moore Best at Carmel
Once again CFPAA member Larry Moore wins an award at Carmel. This time he captured Best of Show at the Carmel Plein Air Festival 2005.
Judy Stach Featured
An article in the Jan 2005 issue of Plein Air magazine featured PAPTC member Judy Stach, and told of how she started the Plein Air Painters of the Jersey Coast patterned after PAF and PAPTC.
Larry Outlaw Wins Award
Received a 2nd place in painting at the juried art exhibit held by
the Osceola Center for the Arts in Kissimmee FL.
Bill Farnsworth Profiled on TV
I will be featured in Gulf Coast Journal on WEDU, the PBS station in the Tampa Bay area, at 8:00 pm March 31st. It will be an artist profile on my Art in Illustration and Fine art.
Sandell in AIS National
One of Val Sandell's paintings, titled "Hammock at Dusk," was chosen for the 6th Annual American Impressionist Society National Exhibit, at the Nichols Taos Fine Art Gallery in Taos, New Mexico. It's 18X 24" and 100% plein air, so I thought I would share.
Maija Baynes Wins Awards
An Award of Merit at the Central Park Art Festival in Winter Haven FL, followed by an Award of Distinction at the Lake Wales Art Show. Her valiant efforts at plein air painting, despite the swarms of mosquitoes and bugs, is gaining recognition for her excellent work.
PAF Members at EPCOT Garden Festival
PAF members invited this year are Carolyn Buchmann, Thom Buttner, Cynthia Edmonds, Dahvi Fradkin, Dorothy Gardiner, Linda Pence, Barbara Perrotti, Charles Schaefer, Cindy Sturla, Mary Jane Volkmann, and Kathleen Wobie.
Hofreiter Chosen for Residency
Brenda Hofreiter has been chosen by the South Carolina State Parks as Artist in Residence at Givhens Ferry State Park, May 16-23.
Larry Moore Sells Out Show
My one man show, "A night at the Opera", had a wonderful response. Though
the turnout was light the end result was big. An art buyer decided it would be nice to have the whole collection. So 25 pieces plus all subsequent opera paintings are going
to the Kessler Collection and will be displayed on the 5th floor of the
Westin Grand Bohemian. I met Mr. Kessler and he is probably one of the most
wonderful human beings I've had the good fortune to know, he absolutely
loves art. A friend of mine says, "All it takes is one", and he was right.
Blondheim Selected EPCOT Ambassador
Linda Blondheim has been chosen as Guest Speaker and Ambassador for the 2005 EPCOT Flower & Garden Festival held at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista FL. She will be talking and demonstrating plein air at various times April 29-May 1.
ECPAP Members Win Awards
The 2005 Beaux Arts Exhibit in Fort Walton Beach FL awarded PAF members Rosalyn O'Grady a 2nd Place, and Carol Ann Cain an Honorable Mention.
Marge Drew Distinguished Artist
ECPA member Marge Drew was awarded an Equally Distinguished Artists cash award in the 47th Annual Members Show at Artists' Workshop, Inc. in New Smyrna Beach FL for her plein air oil painting "Black Point View". This show was a juried show that runs until Feb 25, 115 Canal Street
Mary Jane Volkmann Storyteller
PAF artist and signature member Mary Jane Volkmann will be the "Storyteller's Voice" for the month of February 2005 for the Friends of the Alachua County Library District. The theme "An Artist's Adventures in Africa" will feature slides, music, artifacts, stories and samples of some artwork which she did while in Africa. Prints of her paintings of Namibian life and of her postage stamps will be on display at the library Headquarters in downtown Gainesville.
Marion Hylton Finalist
Her painting "Vision Farms" was chosen as a finalist in the International Artist magazine Landscape Competition.
Barton Wins International Miniature Award
CFPAA member Hope Barton had 3 hand colored etchings accepted into the 13th International Miniature Art Show, and one of them received an Honorable Mention award. See the show at the Dunedin Fine Art Centre, Jan 16-Feb 13, 2005.
Barbara Landry on Easter Seals
I received news this week that my "Tiger Lily" painting was selected as one of the 2005 Easter Seals. The stamps are distributed to nearly 15 million households nationwide in the spring. I was the only finalist from Florida. My bio will be on their website by the first of the year along with the stamp. I wanted all to know that although my work does not permit me the freedom to paint with the plein air group often, it has been a pleasure to paint with them on occasion. Plein air painting tranlates into your studio work as well and I am pleased to be associate with such a group. She is a member of PAPTC.
Clive Pates Receives Fellowship
PAFI member was awarded the 2004-05 Visual Arts Fellowship from the Mississippi Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.
PAF Members in Plein Air Magazine
A picture of several PAF members who participated in the "Florida on My Mind" exhibit at SunTrust Bank in Gainesville FL appeared in the Dec 2004 issue of Plein Air Magazine.
Gardiner Photo in Newspaper
There is a photo of Dorothy Gardiner painting the sunrise in the St.Petersburg Times newspaper today. It is in the Clearwater section. They mention my gallery and where I teach. It's still exciting to get publicity.
Marion Hylton in Arts for the Parks

Melanie Peter Wins Pastel Award
My painting "Cedar" won the Savoir Faire Merit Award at the Southeastern Pastel Society 11th Open International Exhibition 2004 at Marietta-Cobb Museum of Art in Marietta GA Southeastern Pastel Society
Phyllis Pransky on PBS Expressions
PAF member and founder of the Marco Island Outdoor Artists group was featured by PBS on her process of plein air painting. "It was an experience to visually watch what I preach and teach to others." Aired in June 2004, it generated a series of articles in the Naples News and a 10 page article in Paradise magazine. She also won 2nd Place award in oil painting for "Till The Cows Come Home" at the Marco Islands Juried Show and a 1st Place in oil painting for "Mother Nurturer" at the Sanibel Big Arts Juried Show.
